Day and night here are split by offence type, not by clock time: the police feed records no time of day, so “by day” weights shoplifting, theft and burglary and “at night” weights violence, robbery and anti-social behaviour. An area with a busy high street and quiet evenings can therefore read worse by day, and that is the offence mix, not a count of incidents seen at each hour.
