The dense residential quarter behind Basel SBB, 19,511 people, known locally as the Gundeli and one of the city's most mixed and liveable areas. The station itself falls inside it, and the canton has worked on it twice recently: a November 2025 operation covering the station and lower Kleinbasel that made 175 arrests, and a focused action from 13 January to 15 February 2026 against violence in and around the station — 206 people checked, 30 arrested, eight of those for theft. The police reported the situation noticeably calmer by the end and said they would keep watching it. Station-area caution after dark; the residential streets south of the tracks are unremarkable.
